Created secretly in 2017 by Kurdish-Iranian refugee Behrouz Boochani and filmmaker Arash Sarvestani, 'Chauka, please tell us the time' is a film which reflects the life of asylum seekers under Australia’s detention regime. It was filmed on a smartphone kept hidden from authorities for over six months on Manus Island Detenion Centre. It is considered an accurate and reliable depiction and has been acquired for use in university courses.
This book is helpful for understanding the history of refugees in Australia and how the present situation evolved, whilst dispelling some of the myths perpetuated by the media. It is an authoritative resource written by an historian and discusses Australia’s refugee policies of the past and contrasts them with those of today. Attitudes, laws and policies of different countries are also discussed and compared with Australian policies. The language and the way in which the debate is framed in the Australian media is questioned in light of information regarding the facts.
